ELABORATE VICTORIAN SCENES on HEAVY SILVER PLATED REPOUSSE JEWELRY BOX~WB MFG CO
Gorgeous silver plated victorian revival footed jewelry or dresser box. It was made by the WB Mfg. Co. and looks like it was made in the 1930's-40's era. It has the most incredible and detailed repousse work I've ever seen! Each and every side of this box (excluding the very bottom of it) shows extremely detailed scenes featuring a couple, I presume they are a married couple, and their loving, happy life together. Each scene shows them in various moments of their daily lives, mostly very sweet romantic outings. The detailed scenes feature horses, a road or lane, their mansion (which is in every scene), a rock garden wall, a fancy gate, an outdoor stairway, all kinds of foilage including trees, bushes, hedges, just about everything and anything you would see in a very well to do estate home with extensive surrounding grounds. Every scene tells a story. The top of the box shows them riding together on horses. The front panel shows them picking flowers by the roadside. The back panel shows them comfortably strolling together, arm in arm. One of the side panels features their mansion complete with a huge garden pottery planter statue and front steps leading the way to their home. The other side panel shows them walking together further down the road from their property, still with arms interlinked, very sweet. The backround scenery is lovely, you can see the home is in a beautiful setting with lots of trees, flowers and greenery. This box is simply an astounding work of art indeed! When you open the box you see it is fully lined with beautiful rich purple velvet, just an awesome color! This repousse work topps anything I've seen before. The box is stamped WB Mfg. Co with the number 427 below that. Stamped above that is "patent applied for ". This box is in excellent vintage condition for its age. I note there is a thin hairline crack on the inside top left side, just above the hinge. It is hardly noticed and does not affect the workings of this box in any way.(see last photo) Nothing that detracts from the scenes or workmanship of this piece. The lining is excellent as well. The measurements are as follows: 5~1/2" across the top. 3~1/2" top to bottom, 5~1/2" front and back panels, The side panels measure 3~1/16" across and it is 2~1/8" deep. It is very heavy weighing 2 lbs. 4 oz. A wonderful treasure box which is a treasure itself.
